In early 1839, a Dutch botanist named Pieter Willem Korthals discovered a new type of plant which he named Mitragyna speciosa. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) classifies the taxonomy of Mitragyna speciosa, namely the kingdom Plantae, phylum Tracheophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Gentianales, tribe Rubiaceae, genus Mitragyna Korth, and species Mitragyna speciosa (Korth.) Havil (Firmansyah et al. , 2021).
